Exhibition Visit: JUMP!

One of the exhibitions I visited in Liverpool for my interim research was the JUMP! Curation by Sian Bonnell, his lecture reminded about this exhibition so I wanted to recap my thoughts and experience when visiting.

The subject matter was about the fashion of a different cultures as UK and China showed off the fashion of the younger generation, the images selected featured a young adult showcasing some intriguing fashion. The other factor to bring up was the diverse range of framing and size of the photos show as while there were normal framed photos within the curation there were also massive sized photos that really capture your attention quick.

While I don’t often focus on fashion portraits I did do some work that were focused on comic con cosplay, a type of fashion where someone embraces the identity of a fictional character and creates replicas of the character’s appearance so there is some personal connection between me and the exhibition.

Lecture: Sian Bonnell

Our next lecture feature the photographer, curator and publisher, Sian Bonnell. Sian has worked alongside galleries like the The Gallery of Liverpool.

For the lecture itself Sian explained his starting point, he graduated in 1968 and was originally a sculpture artist. He made the switch to photography when he did a shoot in Florence, originally he had no idea what to do with the images he collected so he created a series out of them called Manners.

Sian started to get intrigued with the countryside as the environment provided a diverse set of colours to use for visual flair, he began taking stuff from home and placing them in the walking areas and started to implement humour within his photos as the domestic clashed with the wild.

Sian would expand on his work and start implementing inspirations such as B movies into his photos as shown through his work in Glowing. However one I managed to visit and will talk about later is his work in JUMP!

The lecture was quite fun and it was interesting on learning the works of Sian Bonnell and how he took in house objects and tried to mesh it with the backdrops of nature. I’ve similar in the past for my second year in uni when I took a toy and placed within the walking areas near Acton so it was intriguing to hear similar has been done in a professional level.

Lecture: Branding Design Agency – Uniform

For this lecture we were introduced to Brandon and Mike who were representing the brand design agency called uniform. The point of this company is to assist with promoting and keeping brands up to date by experimenting with new technology to promote brands in a unique and interactive way. They’ve worked around 485 projects last year alone.

The talked about the diverse set of minds and perspectives within their company and have created a template of creative thinking that goes problem then insight then strategy then creative. They work alongside the client and even involve them in workshops to enhance the level of collaboration between the two groups involved. They implement the perspective of the audience by carrying out survey so they know on what areas to focus on for the brand.

The group is known to take risks and push a brand’s identity and new technology as far as they can push it, they never settle for less and strive to create near perfection, they experiment with new tech in workshops even using far out tech like virtual reality to replicate client projects but are happy to honour simplicity at times.

The creative methods are certainly interesting to me especially with their thought process of understanding the problems you face, play fail fast, play, tell stories, create meaningful experiences, keep an ear to the ground, follow your gut and stick to your principals.

The lecture was certainly very interesting meanly through the ways they implemented technology and experimented constantly. These are both factors that photography can implement and can also be a way to expand a personal brand among the market. I hope to put more focus on experimentation on my end as I tend to be simple in my methods of photography and experimentation can increase my skills and make me more diverse in ability and brand recognition.

Interview: Preparation

Each of us were informed that we would be doing professional interviews involving a proper professional of the art industry so we had to start preparing a professional portfolio with a selection of 15 – 25 photos to show the professional and explain or inspirations, work style and what we are trying to say through our photos.

Later on we were given a timetable establishing when our interviews are and who the professional was. I was given Thomas Dukes, a freelance photographer curator and educator who has worked alongside the Open Eye Gallery for the past 5 years. The date confirmed for me is Monday 2nd March.

I decided to use my photos from my interim exhibition as the source of my portfolio, I figured it would be the best selection to detail my current style of work and I’ve done recent research of photographers I can source as inspiration for the photos such as Rodchenko and Bresson just to name a few. It would also make the work look much more cohesive and easier to explain what I went with and what my motivation was for the photos that I made. I went with the minimal of 15 photos at A3 size and will be presenting them through a printbox.

I hope that the interview goes well, and if not I can learn where I went wrong and keep a mental note of what not to do next time.

Live Project: Prep and Shoot

For my personal live project, there was an event coming up in Nantwich as the yearly reenactment of the Battle of Nantwich was approaching. I decided for my personal live project to document this event and send it to the group who manage the event as it allowed me to gain experience working for an event organisation and it may help me branch out in terms of photographer presence . The organisation that manages this and many other reenactments is the non profit group called the Earl of Manchester.

I looked into this group and discovered that they utilise photos as a means of advertisement through social media such as Instagram and Twitter for their events and have used a wide selection of different photographers for their sources of images which they archive in a Flickr account.

When the day came I went out with my dad and focused around the march that the soldiers do before the battle where they start in Malbank School and march all the way towards the town centre. I took many photos focused around the soldiers before, during and after the march. I created some contact sheets so I could look through them and decide which ones to select and edit for submission to the Earl of Manchester group.

Lecture: Denise Courcoux

After the Christmas break was over we had our first lecture of the term this time we were visited by Denise Courcoux, Assistant Exhibitions Registrar at the Tate Liverpool Art Gallery.

The lecture started off with Denise talking about her education which involved completing Undergraduate BA Fine Art with English Literature and how she managed to secure a placement through experimental learning at the National Museum Liverpool.

We went over on how to construct a professional CV and Denise listed things that she did prior to reaching her current job such as volunteering, casual work, utilising Uol’s Careers and employability as a resource. She later got her first proper job as an information assistant at Bluecoat.

At Bluecoat, Denise advanced towards the role of Gallery Coordinator and later the exhibitions officer. This role involved coordinating temporary exhibition, installations, the deinstalls, booking contractors, working with artists as well as partners and project management. Through this work experience Denise discovered some interests and potential new work skills within the environment.

Denise would return to education and go complete a Post Graduate Studies that involved an MA Art Gallery and Museum studies, opportunities presented by professional practice, an art curating route and this allowed Denise to develop here research interests.

Her next job involved Denise managing the small independent Nantwich Museum, she was responsible for managing everything within the museum.

She then went a different route and proceeded into the Wired Acrial Theatre where she would be responsible as company administrator for the performing arts which involved managing accounts and taking bookings, this helped Denise gain marketing experience.

Denise then moved towards the Science and Industry Museum taking up the role of Exhibitions Production Coordinator involving her with coordinating major temporary exhibitions, providing improvements to permanent displays, managing contractors and even leading the smaller projects of the museum.

Her next step was the Part Sunlight Museum where she worked as a museum officer, the role made her responsible for collections, exhibitions, learning and events within the independent museum, experiences where gained for Denise in terms of partnerships.

Lastly Denise moved to and currently works for Tate Liverpool, she works there as a Art Exhibitions Register where she is responsible for loans, collection swaps, fine art shipping, insurance, enviromental and securuty standards and location cotnrol.

During this Denise involved herself in writing practice where she would review, report and do interviews as a means to branch herself out.

During the Q&A we received answers from Denise to be open minded and keep calm and how experience is an important factor and you should gain as much as possible as shown by Denise’s own work record.

This lecture was very interesting for me, I understood through the pathway that Denise went through on how you can start from the bottom and raise towards Independence through great deal of work experience and I found it interesting on how she decided to branch out through writing. It my be good to leave a personal note to expand on different areas as I could use this to increase the variety of different sectors of art I can contribute to and gain experience from.

Catalogue Fundraising: The Event

The day had arrived and after our sessions were done for the day we went down to the reception area and setup the tables and placed the cardboard cutouts in their positions. The event commenced at 5pm and would finish at 7pm.

I was to man the Tombola machine throughout this period trying to convince visitors to have a go at winning out selection of prizes we had lined up, everything from a Elsa doll to a pencil sharpener were setup as the prizes for the tombola. I made sure to be as eccentric as possible creating a persona that would constantly promote the tombola event and try to push the visitors as much as possible at having a go and making sure to explain the rules so people knew how to play, it was quite fun to do and I managed to get quite a few people to have a go at the tombola to a mix of successes and failures on the visitors behalf.

The night overall went decently well, the Tombola proved to be one of the more successful stalls, we discussed amongst ourselves and agreed the event probably would’ve been more successful if we had it during the weekend with an earlier starting time so more people would’ve had the chance to attend. Despite this we a decent sum of money to contribute towards the catalogue for the end of year show.

Catalogue Fundraising: The Prep Work

The meetings were complete and we had a good idea of what ideas were agreed upon that we could setup for the Christmas event, we contacted the Uni staff on information for the tombola and we managed to acquire on to use for the event.

Between me, Sarah and Alberto we discussed which of our own work we were going to place. For my personal contribution I decided to use a selection of photos I shot during my holiday in Iceland as I felt the icy environment of the location fit the Christmas theme well enough so I sat and reduced the selection to a small batch and then had the copies printed to have a good amount available to sell during the event.

We next needed to start budging heavy equipment and placing them into storage we were allowed to use by the Uni staff, we would keep them there until we needed to bring them out for setup the day the event is taking place at. A fellow arts student had made cardboard cutouts that we decided to use in place of Santa’s grotto that we originally had planned as we couldn’t get a Santa.

The event has been decided to take place in the reception area of the Kingsway Campus.

Lecture: Nick Munro

For this guest lecture we were visited by Nick Munro, a award winning product designer who owned his own company.

The presentation began with the story of how Nick advanced in his studies, he originally was an engineer who went to Imperial College London to study engineering and design. He comments on how he uses heroes to define a path and created a term to describe a personal approach called KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Nick started to expand his skills and tried out Glassware and later on tried out Ceramics. Next step was setting up shop and creating his personal brand and thanks to PR from the press, Nick’s brand allowed him to push for partnerships with a great number of different people, companies and events including the London Olympics.

The segment of the lecture that interested me was when he started bringing up points about protection of your I.P and the possibilities of your own work being duplicated. He brings up how it’s best to avoid spilling your secrets of know how to competitors otherwise you run the risk of them copying your work. Nick also advice on how the simple stuff are much easier to duplicate in comparison to more difficult stuff.

Overall, while Nick’s own work isn’t really compatible to my own, his experiences with the business side of things allowed me to gather a bit more info in terms of what to look out for in terms of dealing with competitors and things to avoid doing so that my own work doesn’t risk the possibility of being duplicated.

Catalogue Fundraising: Meeting 2

We managed to schedule a second meeting with performing arts staff and began to discuss matters for the Christmas themed fair we are going to do.

We proceeded with talks about which areas we were going to have the Christmas stores and it is decided that installation 008 would be a good spot to have it, we then continued discussions about what was to be included and things we thought up before such as the Tombola and face painting, we also added in the possibility of setting up a customisation gingerbread men stall but we also discussed possible collaboration between us and the performing art students, ideas such as using the student actors to be the elves for Santa’s grotto and cross promotion using social media to promote the event as well as posters to place in other campuses. We may have found a possible actor for Santa Claus by the name of James Holdsworth.

We lastly covered camera setups for the grotto and who would be operating the camera, health and safety was also covered by bringing up warning labels for homemade cakes which should help ease concerns over any potential allergy or dietary problems for visitors.
